PORT CONFIGURATIONS
All connections are BSPP
Only use parallel threads with high pressure sealing washers
Do not use taper fittings
3 Port Configuration
All motor sizes are available for bi-directional rotation, providing flexibility for a wide range of water hydraulic applications. The 3-port design includes an additional case drain port (T), which enhances system efficiency and reliability.
By alternating the pressure inlet and return ports, the motor shaft can easily reverse direction, ensuring smooth and controlled operation. Both pressure ports on the 3-port configuration are designed to handle full system pressure, delivering robust performance under demanding conditions.
Furthermore, motor performance can be fine-tuned by adjusting the flow and pressure of the return line, allowing precise control for specialized applications in marine, offshore, and industrial hydraulic systems.

Bi-Directional Motor
For bi-directional water hydraulic motors, the return line pressure must always exceed the pressure in the leakage port to ensure proper operation. The leakage port is designed with a maximum pressure limit of 2.5 bar, so maintaining this differential is critical for system reliability and performance.
Geared Motor Assemblies
Water Hydraulics offers a standard range of epicyclic gearboxes designed for applications operating below the recommended minimum speed. These gearboxes provide reliable performance and seamless integration with our water hydraulic motors, ensuring efficiency in demanding environments.
Temperature Guidelines
Our motors deliver full performance between 2°C and 50°C. For temperatures below freezing, we recommend using an environmentally friendly antifreeze—request the Monopropylene Glycol datasheet for details. While operation above 50°C is possible, note that volumetric efficiency may decrease. Always consult Water Hydraulics and specify the maximum operating temperature for your application.
Filtration Requirements
To maintain system integrity, all incoming water must be pre-filtered to a nominal rating of 10µm (25µm absolute) with a filter element rating of β10 = 75 or better. For closed-loop systems, return line filtration is advisable. High-pressure filtration can also be considered; however, as these filters are manufactured in stainless steel, they may represent a costly option.
Shaft Loading
Avoid radial and axial loads on the motor output shaft. Where possible, use a flexible gear coupling to prevent damage and ensure smooth operation.
Start Torque
Smaller motors (M3 and M6) require a minimum pressure of 25 bar to rotate an unloaded shaft, while larger motors start above 12 bar. For applications requiring full-load starts, size the motor based on starting torque, using 60% of the dynamic torque shown in the graphs for calculations.
Operation & Maintenance
To maintain maximum starting torque, operate the motors at least once per month. This simple step ensures long-term reliability and performance.
Overrun Protection
In applications where the motor shaft continues to rotate after the control valve closes, incorporate overrun check valves. For detailed assembly guidance, consult Water Hydraulics.
ATEX Compliance
Our motors are ATEX-approved, meeting the requirements of Directive 94/9/EC for equipment intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Specifications include:
Product group, category, zones: II 2GD ck T6 T85°C +1°C ≤ TA ≤ +40°C.
Fluid
For optimal performance, always use drinking water that meets EEC Directive 98/83/EC standards. If you are unsure about water quality, consult Water Hydraulics (TWHC) for guidance. While the standard product operates effectively on technical water—including distilled, reverse osmosis (RO), or demineralised water—certain operating environments may require changes to seal materials or construction.
In addition to water, these motors can run on non-flammable fluids such as Glycol 95/5 mixtures. However, when using such fluids, internal clearances must be adjusted to maintain efficiency and reliability. It is essential to specify the exact operating fluid in all enquiries and orders to ensure correct configuration.
The standard construction is also suitable for sea water operation. However, due to the higher corrosion potential, long-term use may require noble material upgrades for enhanced durability and extended service life.
